Passion
for Wonton-Making
Reflecting
on the past year, one of my most cherished culinary pursuits has been crafting
this wonton soup recipe. Despite the time-consuming nature of shaping each
wonton, my enthusiasm for savoring tender, flavor-packed pillows in a spicy
miso broth knows no bounds. While unconventional, the combination of finely

become a staple in my kitchen.
Inspiration
Behind the Recipe
My journey
into wonton-making was sparked by
the Smoky
Tofu-Nori Wontons from Andrea Nguyen’s Ever-Green Vietnamese. These delectable
wontons, seasoned with nori and smoked paprika, inspired me to experiment with
various fillings, resulting in a diverse array of flavor combinations. Whether
baking or boiling, these wontons became a quick and satisfying meal option.
Make-ahead
Game Plan
To
streamline the process, I often prepare the filling in advance, allowing for
impromptu wonton soup meals throughout the week. The filling can be
refrigerated for up to five days, making it easy to shape wontons whenever the
craving strikes. Additionally, any unused wontons can be frozen for future use,
ensuring a convenient meal solution.
Choosing
the Right Wonton Wrappers
Selecting
the perfect wonton wrappers is crucial for successful dumpling-making
endeavors. After experimenting with various brands, I've found Nanka Seiman
wrappers to be consistently reliable, offering flexibility and durability for
various cooking methods. While store-bought wrappers often contain
preservatives and additives, homemade wrappers can elevate the dish to a new
level of freshness and flavor.

your wonton-making journey with confidence, armed with the knowledge and
inspiration to create flavorful and satisfying meals. Whether crafting
traditional recipes or experimenting with unique flavor combinations, the art

Freezing
Wontons: A Convenient Method
Introduction
Freezing
wontons is a practical way to enjoy homemade dumplings whenever the craving
strikes. By following a simple process, you can prepare a batch of wontons,
freeze them, and cook them directly from the freezer for a hassle-free meal
solution.
Freezing
Process
- Arrange on a Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with
parchment paper and arrange the wontons in a single layer, ensuring they
are not touching each other.
- Freeze: Place the baking sheet in the
freezer and allow the wontons to freeze completely. This step prevents
them from sticking together during storage.
- Transfer to Freezer Bag: Once frozen, transfer the
wontons to a freezer bag, removing any excess air before sealing. Properly
sealed bags help maintain the quality of the wontons and prevent freezer
burn.
- Store: Label the freezer bag with the
date and contents, then store it in the freezer until ready to use.
Cooking
from Frozen
When ready
to enjoy the wontons, there's no need to thaw them beforehand. Simply boil or
bake the frozen wontons according to your preferred method, adding a few extra
minutes to the cooking time to ensure they are thoroughly heated.
Substitutions
& Variations
- Goat Cheese vs. Cream Cheese: Substitute goat cheese for
cream cheese for a tangy twist to the filling.
- Cottage Cheese vs. Cream Cheese: Surprisingly, low-fat cottage
cheese can be substituted for cream cheese without compromising flavor or
texture.
- Spicy Component: Add minced serrano peppers or
experiment with other spicy ingredients such as habanero jelly or Kashmiri
chile for a flavorful kick.
- Something Green: Incorporate minced kale,
chopped cabbage, or mixed herbs into the filling to add color, flavor, and
nutritional value.
- Lettuce-Wrapped Component: Use the wonton filling as a
delicious filling for lettuce wraps, offering a lighter alternative for
enjoying the flavorful mixture.
Experiment
with these substitutions and variations to customize your wontons to suit your
taste preferences and dietary needs.
Freeze your
wontons with confidence using this convenient method, ensuring you always have
a tasty meal option on hand.

Instructions
Prepare
Wonton Filling

pepper. Mix well until the filling is uniform in appearance. Refrigerate

cooked wontons in each bowl. Top with half of the peanut-scallion
sprinkle.
- Repeat with remaining wontons
and broth. Serve and enjoy!

quantities as needed.
